‘A Perfect and Beautiful Machine’: Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and Alan Turing’s Artificial Intelligence

What Darwin and Turing had both discovered, in their different ways, was the existence of competence without comprehension. This inverted the deeply plausible assumption that comprehension is in fact the source of all advanced competence. Why, after all, do we insist on sending our children to school, and why do we frown on the old-fashioned methods of rote learning? We expect our children’s growing competence to flow from their growing comprehension. The motto of modern education might be: “Comprehend in order to be competent.

LEGO Pirate Proves Existence of Super Wave

Scientists have used a LEGO pirate floating in a fish tank to demonstrate for the first time that so-called “super rogue waves” can come from nowhere in apparently calm seas and engulf ships.

The research team, led by Prof. Nail Akhmediev of the Research School of Physics and Engineering at The Australian National Univ., working with colleagues from Hamburg Univ. of Technology and the Univ. of Turin have been conducting experiments in nonlinear dynamics, to try and explain so-called rogue or killer waves. These high-impact “monsters of the deep,” can appear in otherwise tranquil oceans causing danger, and even sinking ships.

This is a print advertisement for LEGO from the 1960s.  Now, I definitely don’t have any problems with the direction LEGO has been going since… well, shortly after this was published in every respect, including the whole weapon thing.  But regardless, this is pretty hilarious in hindsight.

Education publishers are also much bigger than other media companies that attract much more attention. Pearson is far bigger than AOL or The New York Times Company (and much more profitable). In order to find publishers with greater revenue or profits, you have to go up the ladder to companies like News Corp that include global television markets, or retail entities, like Amazon. This makes companies like Pearson too big to ignore, especially when they’re willing to partner up

F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League Kid-Invention to Receive $250,000 Investment from Edison Nation

One of 20,000 FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL ) teams around the world tackling food safety issues will win an investment prize of up to $250,000 for their solution, as winner of the 2012 FLL Global Innovation Award. The award’s new “Go-To-Market Sponsor,” Edison Nation, has offered to bring the winning idea through the same product development process showcased in their Emmy award-winning PBS television show Everyday Edisons.

FIRST founder Dean Kamen honors kid-inventors at the 2011 FIRST(R) LEGO(R) League Global Innovation Award ceremony at the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

"Through our EdisonNation.com platform, we’re able to work with all kinds of independent inventors to help make their ideas a reality," said CEO of Edison Nation, Louis Foreman. “Our Edison Nation team is excited to work with these young FLL inventors and to leverage our industry capabilities to get their innovations to market.”

Now in its second consecutive year, the FLL Global Innovation Award encourages, celebrates, and supports youth innovation by offering 200,000 FIRST LEGO League participants the chance to compete and win support for their research projects. At the end of the FIRST LEGO League competition season, teams will be invited to submit their research ideas between January 19 and March 1, 2012, to the FLL Global Innovation Award website. A judging panel of industry leaders will review the submissions. The public can also review and vote on the submissions at http://fllinnovationaward.firstlegoleague.org/. One winning team and two runner-up winners will be named at the FLL Global Innovation Award ceremony on June 19 at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) in Alexandria, Va.

“It is innovation that changes the way we live and makes life better and more exciting,” said Founder of FIRST Dean Kamen, adding, “The FLL Global Innovation Award celebrates and encourages innovation by asking kids to think about improving their own future.”

FIRST LEGO League is one of four programs offered by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit that inspires an appreciation of science and technology in young people. FIRST issues an annual challenge to FLL teams on a real-world scientific topic comprised of three parts: the Robot Game, the Project, and the FLL Core Values. This season’s theme is food safety.

Three additional program Partners, Booz Allen Hamilton, John Deere, and Mastercard have also agreed to sponsor the award this year. Tying into the FOOD FACTOR® theme, representatives from the National Center for Food Protection and Defense are expected to attend the ceremony, as well as celebrity chef and inventor Homaro Cantu. Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO David Kappos, inventor Dean Kamen, Louis Foreman, representatives from LEGO, and FIRST President Jon Dudas are among other notable guests expected to attend and honor the winning and runner-up teams.

Lego McLaren Mercedes MP4 24 - by Galbatore
Artist note: The car was originally the MP4 23 model but i made some big changes to the original to create the MP4 24 model. I had to change the front and rear wing and had to take apart the back half of the car and add parts of my own to try and create the exact design of the MP4 24 model.

LEGO Technic Super-8 Movie Projector  - created by Friedemann Wachsmuth

“The projector uses just two engines and is fully featured with automatic feeding, 24 fps, fast rewind and 120m reel capabilities. A decent LED flashlight makes it pretty amazingly bright. The only non-Lego parts are the lens, the reel spindles and the lamp.”
